Introduction
The Sabarmati Report was released on 15th November 2024. Having said that, the movie discusses – ‘Godhra train burning 2002’- one of the most debated and regretful episodes of India’s history. The documentary film is directed by Dheeraj Sarna and its main cast includes actors Vikrant Massey, Raashii Khanna, and Ridhi Dogra. It a hybrid genre of investigative and courtroom drama and a rationale depiction of real life occurrences. Ekta Kapoor produced the film and as he describes in the movie, its major objective is to expose the amalgamation of politics, press and human emotions surrounding the event.
Plot Summary
The plot revolves around a committed journalist, Arjun Mehta (played by Vikrant Massey), who enters the complications of the Godhra train burning. In the process of uncovering the truth about the incident, he’s faced with the obstacles of politics, communalism, and the media.
The work combines documentary film material with dramatized episodes in order to depict the events that occurred after the tragedy and the divisions it has caused. For Arjun, the objective of this quest is not so much fact finding as it is trying times when he is threatened and has to grapple with professional conflicts.

Themes and Execution
The film raises the questions of morals in the media, the law, and the abuse of public opinion. The movie features a courtroom drama and a flashback narrative structure with the aim to emphasize the difficulties of the quest for truth amidst political manipulation. The critics do not, however, see eye to eye on how the film was done.
Critical Reception
Two aspects of the movie have been judged in exactly the opposite way, its performances and cinematography were appreciated, but its screenplay was criticized. Most of the reviewers thought that the focus of the movie shifted too frequently and consequently it diminished the film’s effectiveness.

-
Ratings:
- India Today: 2/5 – Commended the intent but criticized the narrative structure.
- Bollywood Hungama: 1.5/5 – Praised the technical aspects but pointed out inconsistencies.
- The Indian Express: 1.5/5 – Called it overly judgmental with missed opportunities for nuance.
Comparison of works like Parzania and Firaaq, which were made on similar topics, has mentioned the lack of sensitivity in the representation of the subject.
Production and Budget
The production budget was said to be in the region of 25-30 crores, with considerable costs being spent on the recreation of actual events and high standard of cinematography. Although opening numbers were low, the film recovered 10 crores of its expenses through earnings in its first five days, which indicates a relatively poor response of the movie to the audience.
Controversies
The use of Godhra tragedy in the film, however, has become controversial and has sparked debates all around. Vikrant Massey disclosed that the unit was threatened during the making of the film. There are critics who have expressed that the movie shows partiality by showing one side to be free of blames while accusing the other side. Even the teaser of the film was released with repercussions due to the way this specific aspect was presented in it.

Strengths and Weaknesses
- Strengths:
- Strong lead performances.

- Engaging background score.
- Weaknesses:
- A fragmented script with haphazard pacing.
- Lack of nuanced storytelling.
- Overshadowing of core tragedy by subplots.
Conclusion
A shoot for the film has been completed this past July. One can argue, why the Sabarmati Report is such a polarizing topic, and when this happens why not try to combine the facts into a narrative and the story into a film. But it simply isn’t that easy. I want to say we need diachronically-scaled representations as well as horoscopic geometrized recordings of this event, Furthermore, it appears that the execution itself, as the audiences or the critics reviewed it, was terrible.
The storyline is probably the only winning piece in this collage of storms and muddy esoteric. it grabs society’s attention but does not cover the topic’s most intricate issues. The only question that remains, though, is whether it is an ephemeral phenomenon or a sensation which is going to stick around for years to come and age like fine wine.
