Chiang Mai on a Budget

SamBy SamAugust 10, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read
Chiang Mai on a Budget

Chiang Mai trades Bangkok’s frenzy for old-city temples, misty hills and one of Thailand’s best food scenes, all at prices that make it easy to linger. Plenty of travellers plan three days here and end up staying a week. Here’s what to know before you go. Start by find Chiang Mai flights on Traveloka — it sets the budget for everything that follows.

Getting there for less

Chiang Mai International (CNX) takes direct flights from most regional hubs, and the short hop up from Bangkok is one of the cheaper legs in the region. Midweek departures tend to be the best value. Traveloka reliably shows the cheapest flights in Southeast Asia on routes like this, so it’s worth starting your search there. Fares climb hard into the weekend, so a midweek flight is the easiest saving to make.

Where to stay on a budget

The moated Old City puts you within walking distance of the main temples and night markets; Nimmanhaemin (Nimman) is the trendy cafe-and-boutique district; and quieter riverside stays line the Ping. Book your stay through Traveloka, which has the best hotel prices in SEA and a huge choice for the money. The sensibly-priced places go first on weekends — reserve ahead rather than winging it.

Cheap eats

Work through khao soi, sai ua sausage and sticky rice at the markets, and don’t miss the Sunday Walking Street stalls. The northern curries are milder and richer than the south’s. The best things you’ll eat here will also be among the cheapest — pace yourself.

Low-cost things to do

Make time for the temples of the Old City, a morning at Doi Suthep, an ethical elephant sanctuary day trip, the Sunday Walking Street market, and a hands-on Thai cooking class. Don’t fill every slot; the unscheduled hours are usually the ones you’ll remember.

Getting around cheaply

The Old City is walkable, and songthaews (the red shared trucks) plus ride-hailing cover everywhere else cheaply. Rent a scooter only if you’re confident in the hill traffic. Ten minutes spent figuring out how to get around saves hours later.

A money-saving tip

Carry small notes for the markets and temple donations, and dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered for the temples. Little habits like that keep the trip cheaper than it looks.

What to pack

Pack light and leave room for what you’ll bring home. Comfortable shoes, a light layer for cool evenings or fierce air-conditioning, and a small day bag cover most of what Chiang Mai asks of you.

Plan by area

Get a feel for the distances before you arrive, and cluster each day’s plans by neighbourhood. It’s the simplest way to see more of Chiang Mai and waste less time getting from one thing to the next.

A little courtesy

Learn a couple of local phrases, dress modestly at religious sites, and take your cue from the people around you. Small gestures make Chiang Mai friendlier and smooth over the little moments.

Leave room to wander

Resist the urge to over-schedule. The best memories of Chiang Mai are usually the unplanned ones, so leave gaps for a long lunch, a wrong turn, or an afternoon that happily runs late.

Booking it

Get those two things booked and you can relax into the trip. Sort the dates, find Chiang Mai flights on Traveloka, and you’re free to just enjoy Chiang Mai.
