In the upcoming sequel to Disney’s animated feature Moana, called Moana 2, the storm goddess Nalo temporarily strips away Maui’s powers. Moana 2 features voices of Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson however has additional vocal performances by Awhimai Fraser, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Alan Tudyk and Jermaine Clement.
The movie will be released in the United States on November 27, 2024, and is now expected to earn between $215–220 million in the five-day Thanksgiving tie at the box office. Should this happen, it would break the record for the highest five-day weekend ever recorded held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The story of the film Moana is followed in the sequel, Moana 2. Moana is depicted traveling across the enchanting oceans of the Pacific to unify with her ancestors while trying to heal the ocean in the film.
Leaving the home island of Motunui, she begins her search for scattered tribes, hoping to bring them together once again. But Nalo, a cruel storm deity, had sunk the much needed connecting island known as Motufetu into the ocean so that the islanders would not be able to connect.
Her purpose for sailing the vast ocean is to look for Motufetu, the island, and reunite all the people of the ocean. The conclusion of the movie Moana 2 is how Moana manages to break Nola’s curse and restore the balance, so different peoples can come to Motunui now, while almost losing Maui’s demigod status.
Maui Loses His Powers & Tattoos After Fighting Nalo In Moana 2
Nalo strips Maui of his tattoos and demigod powers
At the concluding ceremonies of Moana 2, Maui is stripped of his tattoos and demi-god attributes and is transformed into a human being. In the post-credit scene of Moana 2, the storm god Nalo who practices black magic is seen in human control.
Since Maui is a loyal follower of Moana, he endeavors to assist her in getting rid of Nalo and her wicked companion Matangi. However, he was initially human; Maui, as a babe, was deserted by his babies. Instead of succumbing to his fate, Maui’s life was saved by the kind gods in the Moana cosmos, who made him into a demi-god.
In the case of Maui, his tattoos serve to amplify his demigod identity which is a strong source of power. In the same manner, Moana gets her own tattoos by the end of the Moana 2 when she finally turns into a demigod.
After being killed by Nalo’s lightning bolt while attempting to resurrect the island of Motufetu, which connects all others of Moana’s various oceanic islanders, Moana joins Maui as a demigod rather than a human. Both Maui and Moana, just like another classic Disney hero Hercules, have super human strength that has been attributed to their dermal markings as demigods.
How Maui Regains His Demigod Status In Moana 2
Moana’s ancestors and ocean spirit bring them back
Once Nalo steals the tattoos of Maui, Moana uses her ancestors and the whole ocean spirit to bring back Mauri in order to reverse Nalo’s action. This is the reverse of the actions Nalo had caused so that he was able to delete mahis tattoo, and that Nalo is not as powerful as Moana and her crew thought in the first place.
Even so, Nalo does not appear until the mid-credits scene of the sequel, which shows him as a weaker figure, which is surprising in itself as it is not until Moana and Maui win over Nalo does he appear. Nalo’s plan to kill Moana and make Maui powerless ends up backfiring and makes him look more powerless than before.
Seeing Maui as a mere human in the upcoming Moana 3 would’ve been captivating, it is a Disney movie which has not been advertised yet and has no timeline on when it will be released, even then, such a situation would’ve been bananas tragic if Maui had lost his demigod status.
It would have been a huge mistake for them to make such an enormous character shift for him, including one of the most interesting aspects of his character for a movie like Moana 2 considering that it is one of Disney’s biggest franchises. Fortunately, right around the time when Moana became one of the demigods, his powers were also reinstated.

Why Maui Losing His Powers & Tattoos Is Significant For His Future
Neither Maui nor Moana are permanently demigods
There remains the possibility, however, that Maui – and Moana – might again lose their powers and revert to mortal forms at some point in the future. He’s not a demi god for all time and neither is Moana. As long as Nalo is out there, there is always the chance that he would somehow strip both of them off their demi god attributes since he is a lot more powerful god than them.
Maui and Moana complement each other very well as a team and now that Moana has acquired demi god powers, they are an even more powerful pair. Even if it is the case that after Moana 2, Maui loses his demi god powers once more, it can be forecasted that Moana could regain them in forthcoming Moana films using her new demi god power.
